Activity 3:Analysis of letter by Tang Wen Yue (20)

Analysis of Letter by Ethos:
The author,John Simmons,is a parent who has lost a child due to a gun accident, and therefore he has a good reason for writing the letter. This makes the author taken more seriously and more successful at his attempt to persuade the audience.
Analysis of Letter by Pathos:
The author uses Pathos to persuade politicians to change gun ownership by only stating the negative effects of gun ownership, and always stating how guns can be used to kill. The author also stated that he,as a citizen of the United States, have rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, feels that his rights have been violated by the easiness for a common citizen to purchase a firearm. These make the audience of the letter more sympathetic to the author and more likely to be successfully persuaded.
Analysis of Letter by Logos:
The author uses Logos to persuade politicians to change gun ownership law by only showing the negative effects of owning a gun and of many examples showing that guns are harmful to lives and are not really used as intended. The author also states problems that arise from the present gun ownership laws to further attempt to persuade the audience. He states the number of deaths, murders, injuries and such caused by guns, and the monetary costs of these. This letter is supported by a lot of facts,so it persuades the audience by telling them doing what the author is trying to persuade them to do is logical to prevent or reduce these deaths, murders, injuries and such.Showing the problems caused by the present gun ownership law makes use of Pathos, and so makes use of Logos to the audience that what the author is trying to persuade them to do is correct, and this makes them more likely to be successful in their attempt at persuasion.
