Reflections No 1 - Dionne Choo

1. Based on your understanding of facts and opinions, why do you think this is important to reporters / journalists in the world of online journalism.

Reporters / journalists in the world of online journalism should be careful about distinguishing between facts and opinions. This would reflect on their honesty, reliance, respect and diligence in verifying information. Sometimes, in the haste to publish news quickly, facts are not verified, and sensitive opinions are not omitted. Opinions differ with people, and some people may find another's opinion offensive. Thus, this may made some ethical dilemmas worse due to remarks and opinions posted.

2. How could the limitations explored in one of the articles be controlled?

In articles, it may be difficult for audiences to distinguish between credible websites and non-credible news websites. Thus, reporters / journalists should check for misinformation or sensitive remarks or opinions made.

3. What are some responsibilities of discerning readers?

Discerning readers should verify all information and make sure that opinions are distinguished from facts before acknowledging or taking the information stated seriously. Another way to prevent the widespread of misinformation is to refrain from giving sensitive comments after an article is posted. Sensitive views or comments that may offend others should be filtered before posting.
